Application of cellulose ether in medicine development

- Jan 19, 2018 -

In the phramaceutical industy, microcrystalline cellulose is mainly used in two aspects. One is that it is easy to form a gel in the water, with a sharp stir to prepare the plaster and suspension. The other is to use its moulding function to make a slice of the drug.

Methyl cellulose(MC) is a kind of cellulose methyl ether,a widely used pharmaceutical excipient, which can be taken orally or non-toxic.It can’t be absorbed in the intestines and can be used as the glue for pills. In addition,it has the function of improving disintegration. It can be used for suspension, thickening and emulsion stability of liquid medicine,as well as film coating materials for low viscosity water solution.

Hydroxypropyl cellulose(HPC) water solution has better coating effect than MC coating, but in coating,it is easy to become sticky and difficult to control.Adding a little talcum powder can help.

Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose(HPMC) is a kind of mixed non-ionic cellulose ether, emulsification, thickening, suspension, bonding, gelation and film-forming characteristics, can be used as adhesive agent, decomposition, sustained release(control),film coating.

In drugs, there is a wide range of uses, especially for the removal of a continuous or controlled release agent.HPMC has been included in the “liver”(usually considered safe). It has been accepted as a food additive in Europe and is listed in the food and drug administration’s guidelines for inactive ingredients.
